Cafés in Johor Bahru (JB) have always been a pull factor for me to cross the border, especially when the “hipster” cafés are located about a short 10 minutes walk away from the checkpoint. They are all situated in a small cluster so you can cover a few cafés in one trip (that is if your stomach can take it).
Replacement Lodge & Kitchen first drew my attention to its minimalist facade and interior when pictures of their food flooded my social media platforms quite a while back. Fast forward to 2017, its popularity has not faltered, as its menu proves to be highly pocket friendly and the food quality has been sustained for as long as I can remember.
The Breakfast Platter (RM26.90)
This is a staple dish that never gets old, and also a dish I will look forward to every single time. The most wholesome dish on the menu, this big plate consists of buttery scrambled eggs, sautéed Portobello and button mushrooms, buttery spinach, grilled tomatoes, chicken sausage & a choice of turkey ham/beef pastrami served with muesli bread. Does it get any better than this?
Every element of the dish complemented each other. Scrambled eggs were indeed buttery and oh so fluffy. Muesli bread had a great chew to it and the chicken sausage was well-seasoned. Portion of this plate will definitely satisfy growling bellies!
B&B French Toast (RM 18.90)
This dish is enough to justify the whole visit across the border, in my honest opinion. Only less than five cafés back in Singapore have made me squeal in excitement like this beauty did. Homemade brioche bread pan-fried with egg, butter and cinnamon mix, served with caramelized bananas, beef bacon, premier vanilla seeded ice cream and a touch of maple syrup.
Did that description make you drool? The french toast slabs were a heavenly combination of crispy and fluffy. Soft, fluffy , eggy insides encased by a bold, crispy crust which produced a resonant crack when pulled apart with the fork. Just the french toast was enough to make my mind blank momentarily. The beef bacon was tender and smoky, yet crispy at its edges too. The bananas were so perfectly caramelized that they produced the same sound as the toast when being cut. It was at this point that I began to think that how the cafés back home could not even hold a candle to this beast right here.
I strongly recommend everyone to come to The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen if you do find time to cross the border. Even better, make this your first stop so you are nicely filled up and fueled by their food and great coffee. The sweetest satisfaction comes from the fact that the prices are a good three times cheaper than the overpriced cafés back home.
