Tolido’s Espresso Nook – A Union of Great Coffee & Food

Tolido’s is a humble café located along the outskirts of Bugis, bordering Lavender under an old block of HDB flats. Yet they are no ordinary café which serves up great coffee and affordable and delicious grub. I absolutely love how the café’s price point makes it affordable for everyone to dine at without feeling a pinch in their pocket.

The Ultimate Combo ($12) || Fluffy pancakes with bacon, cheesy sausage and eggs

The menu describes this item befitting “for the indecisive and hungry”. How apt this description is. This wholesome plate combines my 4 favourites: bacon, sausage, eggs and pancakes. Needless to say, based on the contents alone, this dish already gets my vote.

The pancakes were as fluffy as clouds, I kid you not. I also noticed a very distinct taste of the batter in the pancakes, making Tolido’s pancakes the first I have ever tasted of its kind. I had previously tried La Ristretto’s pancakes and declared theirs as the best. However, Tolido’s rendition simply took the cake away. The bacon, cooked to perfection, was sleek and lean with small traces of fats. The slightly charred edges won me over. Cheesy sausages? Count me in. Lastly, what can go wrong with sunny side ups? This dish is a wholesome meal for me and it is definitely filling for me, a big eater.

462 Prawn Laksa Pasta ($17) ||  Singapore laksa sambal spaghetti topped with sauteed fresh succulent prawns

This dish is one of Tolido’s mainstays and was highly recommended by the staff when I asked for pasta recommendations. Although I am not a fan of spicy food, I took a leap of faith and ordered it anyway because I still like the occasional bowl of piping hot laksa.

As promised, the laksa cream sauce was rich and creamy with punctuated hints of the coconut milk. The spice level was a little beyond my threshold, but I did not mind because it was just too delicious. The prawns were indeed succulent and were littered around the pasta I counted 6 juicy prawns shelled with just the tail intact. The pasta was al-dente and springy despite being soaked in the curry broth. Delish. I will highly recommend this to laksa and spicy food lovers.

Our meal at Tolido’s was a sumptuous one and proved to be worth every penny. There is a good balance of mains and all day breakfast items coupled with great coffee. This nook’s ambiance is great for chilling out with friends or simply spend some alone time with your head buried in your books or laptop.
